Citti, June and I put in a cow that was calving right before supper. Within 20 minutes of putting her in the barn she had calved, we watched her on the camera licking off a nice little black baby. FYI- this was a very easy cow to put in the barn, most are not nearly as cooperative. Citti did a wonderful job videoing while I drove and got gates. She is a good helper! Want a peak into our calving barn at night? Here it is. Our heifers spend their days outside in our Hoop barns, but at night we move everyone that hasn’t calved inside. Pairs go into one of the bonding pens lining the outer edge of the barn, and the expecting mamas roam in the middle. Why do we do this? We baled cornstalks today. These bales are used to bed the pigs in hoop barn and our outdoor gestation sows. Cornstalks are not my favorite bedding for pigs. I like straw better. We do not mow these stalks first, we use the twin rake, set it a little higher and rake the loser stalks and husks.
