The tune whistled by the POWs as the enter the camp is the first strain of "Colonel Bogey March," first composed in 1914. As the story goes, the whistling was unplanned for the film, but during filming, Director David Lean was upset that the extras who played the prisoners could not march in time, and ordered someone to whistle a march to keep time to.
