Here’s the lead up to the area model fraction multiplication math pennant I shared the other day. There were a lot of “this is confusing” comments from only seeing the final pennant completed. Area model multiplication is cool and lets kids “see” why we multiply fractions the way we do. It’s just like finding the area of a rectangle, but instead of using the entire length and width, we use a fraction of the length and a fraction of the width. | Scaffolded Math and Science

The area model math pennant I posted yesterday got some comments about it being confusing. I wanted to (hopefully!) clear up some of it with a quick area model fraction multiplication video. It’s a step-by-step method, so I can see how just seeing the final result could be a bit🤔. In this short video, 3/4 is multiplied by 1/2. It’s a lot like finding the area of a rectangle, except instead of using the entire length and width, we only use a fraction of each. This method always works, even with
