In 1916, an expedition led by Robert Griggs discovered the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes - a steaming landscape created by the 1912 Novarupta volcanic eruption. Inspired by the wonders he saw, Griggs worked to preserve Katmai as a national park. His efforts to protect Katmai for future generations exemplifies the national park idea. This year, as we celebrate the centennial of the National Park Service, Katmai commemorates the 100 year anniversary of Griggs's discovery. Follow our Facebook page
